Why a cleared drain blocks again
A drum or sectional cable machine works by pushing a rotating cutting head through an obstruction. It is effective, it is the right tool for a great many blockages, and it restores flow quickly.
What it does not do is clean the pipe. It opens a channel through the middle of whatever is in there. The grease, scale, sludge or root material coating the wall is still coating the wall, and the effective diameter of the pipe is still reduced. Water flows again, the call is closed, and the same restriction begins catching material immediately.
That is the whole explanation for the pattern people find frustrating: a drain cleared three months ago blocking in the same place. Nothing was done badly. The wrong question was answered.
Hydro jetting answers the other question. High pressure water through a nozzle with rearward-facing jets pulls the hose up the line while scouring the wall in every direction. The material comes off the pipe and flushes away, and what is left is close to the bore the pipe had when it was installed.

Two rows worth reading twice
Two rows matter locally. Drain-side scale is more common here than in soft water regions, because the same very hard water that deposits mineral in the water heater deposits it in waste lines too, gradually narrowing them over years. Cabling barely touches that. Jetting is the tool designed for it.
The bottom row is the reason inspection comes first. Jetting a line with a collapse or a significant offset does not fix the problem and can make it worse. Seeing the line before jetting it is the difference between the right treatment and an expensive mistake, and on a septic property it also confirms the problem is in the pipe rather than in the tank or field.
Roots, and why they keep coming back in a desert
Root intrusion behaves differently here than in wetter regions, and the difference works against the property owner.

In a wet climate, roots have alternatives; soil moisture is widely available and a sewer line is one option among many. In dry ground, a slightly leaking pipe joint is a reliable, concentrated water source, and desert trees and shrubs will travel a genuinely surprising distance to reach one.
This matters for how you interpret a clearing. Removing a root mass restores flow, but the entry point that admitted the roots is unchanged and still leaking. Regrowth is close to certain, and the interval tends to be consistent, which at least makes it plannable.
Jetting handles roots better than cabling in one respect: it flushes the cut material out of the line rather than leaving it to be caught by the next thing through. But it does not repair the joint. If a camera shows several entry points along the run, repairing or replacing that section is what actually ends the cycle.
Practical points before booking it
- Inspect first where there is any doubt about pipe condition, particularly on older cast iron or clay runs.
- Access matters. A cleanout makes the job straightforward; without one, access has to be created and that changes the scope.
- Older or compromised pipe may not be a candidate, and a competent operator will say so rather than proceed and hope.
- On septic, confirm the problem is the line rather than a full tank or a failing field before paying to clean a pipe that was never the issue.
- Ask what happens to what comes out, since jetting flushes material downstream and on septic that means into the tank.
- It is usually a planned visit rather than an emergency response, because it takes longer and works better on a line that has already been opened.
That last point is worth planning around. In a live backup, the immediate priority is restoring flow, which usually means clearing it by the fastest available method. Jetting is what you book afterward to stop it happening again, once the emergency is over and the line can be seen.
Standards, discharge and what happens to what comes out
CODES AND PERMITS
Jetting itself is a cleaning operation rather than an alteration, so it does not normally involve a permit. Where it does touch regulation is downstream: everything scoured off the pipe wall has to go somewhere, and on a septic property that somewhere is the tank.
Maricopa County's Department of Environmental Services regulates onsite wastewater systems, and a tank already near capacity is a poor destination for a jetting job's worth of flushed material. Coordinating the clean with a pumping visit is the practical answer. On a sewer connection the question does not arise, which is another reason it is worth knowing which system you are on before booking.
Jetting questions on local drain and septic lines
Is jetting safe for older pipes?
It depends on the pipe, which is exactly why inspection comes first. Sound pipe in reasonable condition handles it without difficulty.
Pipe that is already cracked, offset or badly deteriorated is a different matter, and pressure can worsen an existing defect. On older cast iron or clay runs, seeing the line first is not an upsell, it is basic care.
How often would a line need jetting?
Only when there is a reason. For most properties that means after a repeat blockage, or when a camera shows accumulation that cabling will not remove.
Lines with a known history are different. A run with root entry points, or a kitchen line in a property with heavy grease use, benefits from a planned interval, because the alternative is an unplanned backup.
Will jetting damage my septic system?
The jetting itself works on the line, not the tank. What is worth thinking about is where the flushed material ends up, which is in the tank.
On a system already near capacity, that is worth coordinating with pumping. It is also another reason to confirm first that the line is the actual problem rather than the tank or the drain field.
Is it more expensive than cabling?
On the day, yes. Over a line that keeps blocking, it is frequently cheaper, because the comparison is one jetting against several cablings plus the disruption each time.
Where a line has blocked once and the camera shows nothing structural, cabling is the proportionate answer and jetting would be over-treating it.
Can it remove tree roots permanently?
It removes them thoroughly and flushes the debris out, which is better than cabling alone. Permanently, no, and no clearing method can.
Roots return because the entry point remains. Ending the cycle means addressing the defect that lets them in, which is a repair rather than a cleaning.
My drain is blocked right now. Should I book jetting?
For an active backup, restoring flow comes first, and that is usually fastest by cabling. Jetting is a longer procedure and works better once the line is open.
The sensible sequence is clear it now, look at it, then decide whether jetting is warranted. Booking jetting into a live emergency often means paying for both.
Same drain, same problem, again?
